Guitar Education Programme

This year we have some really exciting plans for our music education programme. We have two main programmes. One is based around classical guitar and the other incorporates steel-string guitar styles (in the form of a workshop) with Andy McKee. The courses and workshops are part of the WGFI quest to provide Ireland with a first-class guitar summer school and to provide the opportunity to study with the world's greatest players.

Workshops

The workshops are designed for guitarists of all abilities and will offer you the opportunity to learn from the best in the business. This year the steelstring workshop is provided by the great Andy McKee.

The classes will take the format of interactive workshops and a basic knowledge of the guitar is recommended to get the most out of the workshop.

It will take place on Saturday 4th July in Waltons New School of Music, South Great George's Street. Places are limited and allocated on a 'first come first served' basis so please book early to avoid disappointment!

Classical Guitar Course

This course is for classical guitarists of all abilities. On this course you will have the opportunity to study with some of the most notable guitarists in the world, such as the David Russell, Los Romeros, Flavio Cucchi, Krzysztof Pelech, John Feeley and Marion Hyland. The classical guitar course runs from Wednesday 1st July to Sunday 5th July inclusive. A basic knowledge of the guitar is required to get the most out of the course.

It is held in the contemporary surroundings of the Royal Irish Academy of Music and DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama. Those on the course get the best seats at all events (VIP Festival Pass), masterclasses, seminars, accommodation (optional), lunch (optional) and chamber music classes. Most of the classes take the form of an informal masterclass with discussions on technique, musicianship skills etc. This is a fantastic learning experience and a good opportunity to practice your performance skills or, if you wish, you can sit back and watch others playing. There will also be informal question and answer sessions, sight reading skills and general discussions. You may also avail of chamber music classes with Krzysztof Pelech and Marion Hyland (Head of Guitar Studies at RIAM) which will culminate in an end-of-festival concert.

Places are limited and allocated on a 'first come first served' basis so please book early to avoid disappointment!

The Classical Guitar Course is €395 for the five days. The price for the accommodation is separate from the course fee. If you are part of a guitar ensemble (2 or more guitars) and would like to perform in the Los Romeros masterclasses in the National Concert Hall please inform us on your application form stating what you intend to perform, the members of your ensemble and if possible include a recording.
